Team Grillo!
Llandeilo Town Council in 20/21 decided to take the plunge and create a Volunteer Team to maintain the two parks, replacing the existing external contractor methods that were previously in place. This was to alleviate the rising costs in grass cutting, bin collection and other general maintenance such as cleaning, weeding and planting. The annual spend on grass cutting alone was over £15,000, which was simply unsustainable going forward. Therefore, Llandeilo Town Council purchased its own machinery at a cost of £10,500 and set out recruiting volunteers, calling themselves the Grillo Group! Aptly named after the new mowing machine.
The volunteer group now consists of over 12 regular volunteers who maintain the parks on a weekly basis, with new cutting and planting methods implemented to enhance bio-diversity and saving on over-cutting and fuel costs where possible.By utilising volunteers instead of external contractor spending, the Council can now invest a sum of £10,000-£12,000 per annum into enhancing the parks instead of grass cutting.
Projects this year include a dead hedge habitat, line play markings for younger children to play a variety of games, alongside long-term investment into park facilities such as the Bowls club and Tennis Courts. If you would like to join the Grillo group and make a difference in your community, please contact the Clerk at clerk.ltc@gmail.com or look out for the next volunteer morning. We welcome all who can help in any way!
